PAINTING OF GUIDE POSTS

Guide post painting practices are set forth which comply with the current standard of the Australian Country Roads Board. Different methods of application are described for previously painted posts and for unpainted posts. In the former case, when the previous paint is not peeling or cracked, washing down with a solution of tri-sodium phosphate, synthetic detergent, sodium hypochlorite solution and water (proportions are given) is recommended. The post may then be painted (procedure outlined). In the case of peeling or cracked paint, removal of all loose paint is recommended. Unpainted posts must first be primed with a suitable wood primer for acrylic latex paint (linseed oil based primers including red lead primer must not be used) followed by two applications of guide post paint. If posts are painted in the depot they should not be stored in the open before use. If they cannot be kept under cover, all coats after the primer should be applied in the field.
