MARINE DIESEL ENGINEERING IN 1969

Three leading engine designers have introduced medium-speed engines with outputs in excess of 800 bhp/cyl, and plans for similarly rated machines have been announced by several other engine builders. The super-large-bore ( 930-mm bore and above ) low-speed engines which were coming into service during 1968 have now become well established. Service reports on the first B and W K98FF engines and Sulzer RND105 machines show very favorable results. Developments of the major engine manufacturers are reviewed, and the position of the diesel vs the gas turbine and nuclear plant is discussed.
