RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN SIMPLIFYING AND IMPROVING THE TILT WING DESIGN

Since the initial flight in 1958 of its VZ-2 the first tilt wing aircraft, Vertol Division of Boeing has been actively engaged in developing and improving basic tilt wing design. The approach, techniques, and results of various analyses and test programs to achieve this objective are reviewed in this paper. Efforts to extend the performance, maneuverability, and control characteristics are discussed, as well as the application of technological developments to specific requirements. Results indicate that the tilt wing technology has arrived at that stage of design and development where, with a simple and efficient design, is is now possible to meet specific military requirements.
