ACOUSTIC STRAIN GAUGE TORSIONMETER
The application of digital electronic techniques to a torsion-meter employing acoustic ( vibrating wire ) strain gages has produced a remote indicating and/or recording instrument that will work reliably for long periods at sea. It is suitable for steam and motor ships alike and is capable of measuring the power transmitted by a propeller shaft to better than 1 percent of normal service power. The instrument is very suitable for measured-mile trials and, with the aid of an additional electronic unit, can also measure the oscillatory component of the torque in the shaft of a motor ship.
