VSTOL SHORT HAUL AIRCRAFT OPTIMIZATION STUDY

An optimization study to determine the effects of propeller design on the Direct Operating Cost (DOC) of tilt rotor and folding tilt rotor aircraft was performed. Methods for determining the propeller performance in hover and cruise flight and some suggested designs are shown. Using these propellers, the minimum-DOC 80 passenger tilt rotor design resulting for a 200 mile design range is found to cruise at 450 mph at 20,000 feet, with a wing loading of 135 psf and a disc loading of 10 psf. The best folding tilt rotor is similar except for a speed of 550 mph and a slightly lower DOC. Further propeller design studies are recommended in order to improve these Direct Operating Costs.
