THE BEHAVIOUR UP TO COLLAPSE OF LOAD BEARING DIAPHRAGMS IN RECTANGULAR AND TRAPEZOIDAL STIFFENED STEEL BOX GIRDERS

THE PAPER DESCRIBES THE RESULTS OF TESTS ON NINE LOAD BEARING STIFFENED STEEL DIAPHRAGMS, SIX OF WHICH WERE RECTANGULAR AND THREE OF WHICH WERE TRAPEZOIDAL. THE EFFECTS ON ELASTIC AND ULTIMATE LOAD DIAPHRAGM BEHAVIOUR OF THE INITIAL IMPERFECTIONS, VERTICAL AND ROTATIONAL MISALIGNMENT OF THE BEARINGS TENSION FIELD ACTION IN THE WEBS AND THE TRANSVERSE STRESS CAUSED BY SLOPING WEBS, WERE STUDIED. A COMPARISON OF EXPERIMENTAL UNSERVICEABILITY AND COLLAPSE LOADS WITH THOSE PREDICTED, USING THE METHODS PROPOSED BY THE COMMITTEE OF INVESTIGATION INTO THE DESIGN AND ERECTION OF STEEL BOX GIRDER BRIDGES, IS GIVEN FOR SOME OF THE DIAPHRAGMS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE ANALYSIS DOES NOT REFLECT ACCURATELY THE COMPLEX BEHAVIOUR OF SUCH DIAPHRAGMS AT HIGH LOADS, BUT NONE THE LESS PROVIDES A SAFE, CONSERVATIVE METHOD FOR CALCULATING ULTIMATE LOAD CAPACITY.
