CORROSION PROTECTION FOR SURFACES EXPOSED TO MOVING ICE

A review of marine corrosion mechanisms which thrive in the ice abraded zones of structures is presented. Standard corrosion protection methods are reviewed for their practicality in the Arctic. Some preliminary experiences with various coating on the hulls of U.S. Coast Guard Polar Icebreakers are reported. Selected feasible techniques are ranked according to their probable cost effectiveness in applications on surfaces exposed to moving ice. Areas in need of further investigation are outlined.
