ALTERNATING METHOD APPLIED TO EDGE AND SURFACE CRACK PROBLEMS

An alternating method for solving edge crack problems in two dimensions and surface crack problems in three dimensions is presented. The mechanics of the alternating method are defined. A numerical example of the alternating method, based on a simple problem with no singularities is provided. Specific application of the alternating method to the following situations is analyzed: (1) infinite plate with a central crack, (2) edge loaded semi-infinite plate, (3) penny-shaped crack in an infinite body, and (4) semi-elliptical cracks.
