REFERENCE MANUAL FOR CARGO GEAR CERTIFICATION

ICGB is a non-profit membership organization which provides cargo gear inspection certification and consulting services on a world-wide basis, such services being arranged through the headquarters office in New York or directly with any local bureau representative. Accreditation has been given to ICGB by the U.S. Coast Guard and by the U.S. Department of Labor, to provide cargo gear certification throughout the U.S. and abroad. The manual is in four sections. The first summarizes the standards and provides a guide for the certification of cargo gear. Details are given regarding the documentation procedures and the various testing criteria applied to a variety of cargo gear units. Considerable attention is devoted to a description of the basic certification services available including design approval, annual and quadrennial certification and other related requirements. Section 2 considers in detail, the certification of loose gear, with definitions thereof. Sketches are provided showing various loading methods and systems of identification of individual articles of loose gear. A simple method is given in the third section, to determine safe working loads and prooftest load requirements of loose gear and wire rope. Force diagrams and calculations are provided for a variety of gear arrangements. The last section is a guide for the certification of shore-based material handling devices and contains information on forms, requests for services, equipment categorization, prooftesting requirements and fees. Completed sample forms, work sheets and certificates are appended.
