APPLICATION OF SIDE GROOVES IN THE DETERMINATION OF K SUB IC FOR HIGH-STRENGTH METALS

An investigation has been made to determine the effect of side grooving on plane strain fracture toughness values produced from a wide variety of steel, titanium, and aluminum alloys. The results indicate that side grooves often cause the specimen to fracture at or near maximum load, thus permitting a greater degree of certainty in determination of the load at initial crack instability. The shear lips which would normally form on the fracture surface were suppressed by the side grooves.
