1974 SPEED STUDY
The findings of the 1974 survey of operating speeds of various types of motor vehicles on the highways of New York State are presented in tabular and graphic form. The survey is part of a national study, the purpose of which is to ascertain the speeds at which vehicle operators wish to drive, under prevailing highway conditions and legal speed limits, when other vehicles do not interfere with their choice of operating speeds. All sites were located on relatively level tangents with long sight distances, and were operated on week days in daylight during good weather conditions, and during periods of relatively low traffic density. It is noted that on the majority of the State Highway System, the average speed has not exceeded the currently posted limit; in the Interstate System, the posted speed limits were violated almost every time.
