THE DEVELOPMENT OF GUIDES FOR TEACHER PREPARCATION IN DRIVER EDUCATION

In an effort to improve driver education programs, a set of instructional guides were developed for use in preparing programs of instruction for prospective driver educators for secondary schools and commercial driving schools. The development of both guides (secondary school, and commercial driving school) involved four processes: an analysis of both the highway transport system and the instructional system, public and private; identification of the performances, skills, and knowledge required of the driver educator in meeting his instructional requirements; and the preparation and assembly of materials needed to fulfill the instructional objectives. In the analysis of instructional requirements, teacher preparation standards were surveyed and driver educator factors (curriculum development and administration) were analyzed. The determination of sources of information and the organization of the guide content are discussed.
