SOME DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS IN COMPARTMENTAL PLATE-TYPE FUEL ELEMENTS CONTAINING UO2
Some design calculations for compartmented flat-plate fuel elements employing stainless steel as the structural material and uranium dioxide as the fissile material are described. The calculations include consideration of stresses resulting from fission gas release, hydraulic stresses, and thermal capabilities of a plate-type fuel element for pressurized water applications. The guiding philosophy in this design study was development of parameters for a metallurgical feasibility study rather than a finalized fuel element design.(Author)
