SPECIFICATION OF CONCRETE FOR DURABILITY

THE PAMPHLET DISCUSSES FACTORS AFFECTING THE DURABILITY OF CONCRETE AND EXAMINES THE METHODS THAT ARE USED TO ACHIEVE ADEQUATE DURABILITY. PERMEABILITY IS STATED TO BE THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS INFLUENCING DURABILITY. THE WAY IN WHICH THE GRAPH SHOWS THE RELATION THAT HAS BEEN FOUND BETWEEN THESE SPECIFICALLY FOR THE USE OF ASPHALT OVERLAYS, A NUMBER OF FACTORS. A LIST IS GIVEN OF THE INDIRECT METHODS THAT ARE USED IN A NUMBER OF CODES OF PRACTICE BRITISH STANDARDS AND OTHER STATEMENTS TO SPECIFY THE THE DURABILITY OF CONCRETE; THESE ARE BY SPECIFYING COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH, MINIMUM CEMENT CONTENTS AND MINIMUM CEMENT CONTENTS PLUS DIRECT CONTROL OF WATER/CEMENT RATIO. THE RELATIONS THAT EXIST BETWEEN PERMEABILITY AND WATER/CEMENT RATIO, COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH AND WATER/CEMENT RATIO, COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH AND PERMEABILITY WATER/CEMENT RATIO AND CEMENT CONTENT, AND CEMENT CONTENT AND PERMEABILITY ARE THAN DISCUSSED IN TURN. EACH IS ILLUSTRATED BY GRAPHS BASED ON RECENT RESEARCH. THE TECHNICAL AND PRACTICAL ADVANTAGES OF USING COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TO CONTROL DURABILITY ARE THEN DISCUSSED IN DETAIL TOGETHER WITH THE DISADVANTAGES OF USING A MINIMUM CEMENT CONTENT. THE REPORT ENDS BY GIVING DETAILS OF A PROPOSED METHOD OF SPECIFYING DURABILITY BASED ON COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH.
