AN ASSESSMENT OF TWO NON-DESTRUCTIVE TECHNIQUES AS A MEANS OF EXAMINING THE QUALITY AND VARIABILITY OF CONCRETE IN STRUCTURES

The results of two series of tests are presented as a first stage of the assessment of the partial safety factor for concrete strength, YM. The non-destructive techniques of pulse velocity and rebound index were used for predicting the characteristic strength of small concrete columns. It is concluded that a reasonable empirical assessment of YM by non-destructive techniques is possible. The test results indicate a need for the adoption, in addition to YM, of a quality acceptance factor, YP. /Author/TRRL/
