STABILITY OF FINE ASPHALT CONCRETE

The author points out that the formation of corrugations in fine asphaltic concrete surfacings, caused by stresses induced by the braking and acceleration of vehicles, depends to a large extent on the quality of the wearing course, and in particular on the stiffness of the bituminous mixture used. A review of current Austrian specifications indicates that the requirements for stiffness are too low. Measures for increasing the stiffness are considered; these include the use of harder types of bitumen, increasing the proportion of coarse chippings and broken aggregate, and compaction to a residual voids content of about 4 percent of the volume. /TRRL/
