Impacts of Marijuana Legalization on the Trucking Industry
This report examines trends in marijuana legalization, examines hiring implications for truck drivers, and presents results from a survey of U.S. motor carriers and truck drivers. Driver drug testing results from the U.S. Department of Transportation (2012-2021) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA's) Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (2020-2022) are also included. 238 motor carriers and 3,302 truck drivers responded to survey questions related to: carrier hiring practices, marijuana testing of drivers, driver knowledge of regulations, driver opinion of impairment time after marijuana use, and whether changes are needed in federal drug testing policies. The majority of drivers and carriers agreed that changes are needed in federal drug policy rules and that an impairment test should replace the current marijuana use test.
