This paper describes instrumentation which has been developed at ARRB to measure the response of pavements during experiments conducted as part of the program of trials with the accelerated loading facility (ALF). These consist of devices to measure the surface deformation, and deflections and deformations at depths within the pavement structure, together with logging systems to store data and give ready access to it as required. Surface deformations are measured by a transducer which is constrained to follow fixed transverse paths across the test area. Deformations are measured as differences between measured profiles. The accuracy of measurement of deformation is plus or minus 0.7 mm. Deflections and deformations within the pavement are measured by setting references at selected depths in a hole drilled in the pavement. Displacement transducers, held in a mounting at the pavement surface, register on rods attached to the reference points, and deflections are measured simultaneously at all the depths as a wheel load passes. Deflections are measured to an accuracy of plus or minus 0.02 mm. Deformations are measured manually by means of a vernier depth gauge to measure changes in the distance between a surface reference and the ends of the reference rods. A digital data acquisition system records all data. It provides for on site plotting of raw data and machine readable outputs for subsequent analysis. The report also outlines possible future developments in instrumentation - further methods of measuring deflections and deformations, and the measurement of strains in asphalt layers and soil moisture changes.
