CONSTRUCTION OF ROAD EMBANKMENTS WITH CLAY

The paper deals with the reconstruction of road embankments along a river with ravines. The soil was sedimentary clay with layers of silt and sand. Soil from the cuts was used as embankment filling. The calculation of stability showed that it was possible to construct 12 m high clay embankments consisting of 2,5 m thick clay layers with 0,5 m thick gravel layers in between. The settlements were 60 mm at a maximum after three years. This was a result of close pre-studies of the properties of the soil. The importance of adapting the geometry of the embankment and the construction method to the soil properties and the weather is stressed. (TRRL)
