CELLULAR PLASTICS AS LIGHT FILLING IN ROAD AND RAIL EMBANKMENTS

The article describes the reconstruction of a road and rail embankment with extensive settlements, 5-7 cm per year, which is connected to a concrete bridge deck on bearing piles. Part of the filling was changed (36 m length). The new filling was superlight expanded polystyrene (cellular plastic). Measurements during 15 months showed about 2% elastic and permanent deformation and 15 mm deformation in the soil layers close to the concrete deck. (TRRL)
