PRELIMINARY TESTS IN THE USE OF STRESS-WAVE EMISSION ANALYSIS FOR THE DETECTION OF CRACKING DURING WELDING

Stress wave emission analysis techniques were used to detect cracking which occurs immediately after welding in CTS tests, butt-weld cracking tests and in the root pass of full-size butt welds. There is a correlation between the length of crack and the total area of the bursts of energy as recorded on an ultra-violet trace. (Author)
