EFFECT OF WEATHER AND ROAD CONDITIONS ON MOTORWAY TRAFFIC FLOW

SAAN JA KELIN VAIKUTUS MOOTTORITIEN LIIKENNEVIRTAAN

Weather and road conditions have a significant influence on driver behaviour and traffic flow. The differences in conditions are also shown in accident statistics. The article deals with an investigation, where darkness was found to increase considerably the accident risk, particularly at low hourly volumes. Wet road conditions are also dangerous, but the average degree of accidents was highest under snowy and icy road conditions. (TRRL)
