ARTICULATED CARS FOR PORTLAND TRANSIT

The 26 articulated light rail vehicles to be used on the Portland, OR, Banfield Transitway Project are built by Bombardier under license from a Belgian firm. The lightweight steel cars, each seating 76 and accommodating 135 standees, feature electrohydraulic brakes (a first for LRVs in North America), and solid-state electrical power conditioning. A related column relates the development of the Banfield transit line after Portland opted for rail transit over an expanded freeway east of the city.
