Marseille opened its first rapid transit line in 1979 and a portion of its second route in 1984. The remaining 2 segments of Line 2 will be in operation in 1986 and 1987. This French city's Urban Mobility Plan foresees further extensions of both lines, along with the light rail system which is already integrated closely with the rapid-transit routes. The rapid transit lines feature rubber-tired rolling stock, centralized traffic control and automatic train operations. Buses, streetcars and trolley buses are being closely coordinated with rapid transit. Being studied is an integrated fare system for all modes, including the French National Railways.
