Charleroi, Belgium, is continuing to expand its light rail network, assisted by national government grants for both planning and construction. A city-center loop, partially elevated, is being built as the focus of eight radial lines, two of which are the original tramway routes. Some of the new LRT lines follow abandoned railroads while others involve completely new construction. Building was complicated by mine subsidence and the high water table. The planned 47.7-km system eventually will serve 61 stations. Some existing rolling stock will continue in use and will be supplemented by new 6-axle articulated cars of Belgian construction.
