THE FUTURE OF AUTOMOBILE SAFETY

This article notes briefly the future of automobile safety. Positive aspects noted include the adoption of a legal drinking age of 21 in 23 states, media coverage of harsher penalties for abuse of driving privileges through drugs or alcohol, and a Gallup Poll showing 60 percent favoring air bags in all new cars and 75 percent favoring a legal drinking age of 21 in all states. Negative aspects noted are issuing of a weak and ambiguous standard for occupant protection by the Department of Transportation, the need for a safer car, and the lack of support for insurance companies and other trade associations in bringing the issue of auto safety before the general public.
