THE APPLICATION OF PEDESTRIAN SIGNALS AT TRAFFIC-SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS

This article describes Federal Highway Administration Research concentrated on the application of pedestrian signals at traffic-signalized intersections. The study was conducted to determine the nature and extent of the problems pedestrians experience at intersections both with and without pedestrian signals, to develop improved criteria and warrants for determining where pedestrian signals should or should not be used based on sound human factors and traffic engineering principles, and to develop practical guidelines that traffic engineers could use in applying the warrants.
