This article describes the Rear Guard detector system which is distributed by Castleton, Inc., of Rancho Cordova, California. Rear Guard is described as a variable ultrasonic proximity alert that uses advanced ultrasonic technology to detect objects to the rear of a vehicle at distances ranging from 6.5 feet down 15 inches. When the vehicle is put in reverse and an object behind it comes into range, an alarm starts to beep, at first intermittently, and then continuously as the vehicle approaches the object and reaches the inner limits of the sensing device. At the same time a set of lights on the Rear Guard control box, attached to the dashboard, flash on green at first, then turn red as the vehicle comes within a preset distance of the object from 15 to 30 inches. The device has been used on large trucks, ambulances, and an adaptation of it on school buses. It can also be installed on regular automobiles.
