SAND BASES STABILIZED WITH FLY ASH. ACCELERATED TESTING IN ROAD TESTING MACHINE

Full scale testing of a reference pavement and a test pavement was carried out in the Danish road testing machine to compare the lifetime of the two pavements. The reference pavement was a traditional structure consisting of asphalt, gravel base and sand subbase. The test pavement had a base of flyash/cement/lime stabilized sands. The pavements were built on a typical Danish clay subgrade. Traffic loading was simulated by dual wheel passages under varying climatic conditions including freeze/thaw periods, and the ground water level was maintained by automatic control. The pavements were instrumented with strain gauges, linear variable differential transformers and strain cells of the diaphragm type to measure critical strains and stresses. Functional deterioration was determined by calculation of a serviceability index from measurements of roughness, and structural deterioration was established by measurements with the falling weight deflectometer. Comparison was made between measured and calculated strains and stresses, as well as between observed functional and structural design lives and predictions based on Danish design criteria. In the first freeze/thaw period the stabilized sand basecourse cracked. The cracking became apparent when calculated layer modulus decreased from 10000 mpa to 2000 mpa. During the tests there was no indication of cracking in the asphalt layer. Based on the development of roughness and rutting, the pavement with traditional structure will probably have a shorter service life than a pavement in which the gravel base is replaced by flyash/cement/lime stabilized sand base course.
