SETTLEMENTS OF CIRCULAR, RIGID FOUNDATIONS ON NON-COHESIVE SOIL INFLUENCE OF DYNAMIC PRELOADING

THE INVESTIGATION DEALS WITH SETTLEMENTS UNDER STATIC AND DYNAMIC LOADING OF A CIRCULAR, RIGID FOUNDATION ON DENSE, NON-COHESIVE SOIL. IT SPECIALLY DEALS WITH IMPULSIVE LOADING FROM A DROP HAMMER AND ITS EFFECT ON SETTLEMENTS UNDER SUBSEQUENT STATIC LOADING. THE NON COHESIVE SOIL IS LOADED WITH A UNIFORM OVERBURDEN PRESSURE, REPRESENTING THE WEIGHT OF LOOSE SOIL AROUND A DEEP FOUNDATION. THE INVESTIGATION SHOWS, FOR BOTH MOIST AND SATURATED SOIL, THAT REPEATED DYNAMIC LOADING WITH A DROP HAMMER HAS A HARDENING EFFECT ON THE SOIL WITHIN THE ACTUAL RANGE OF OVERBURDEN PRESSURES. A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE RESULTS OF STATIC AND DYNAMIC LOAD TESTS SHOWS THAT SETTLEMENTS UNDER STATIC LOADING CAN BE PREDICTED FROM A DYNAMIC LOAD TEST WITH A DROP HAMMER AND DYNAMIC THEORY OF ELASTICITY. THE TESTS SHOW THAT THE RATE OF LOADING CAN BE DECREASED WITH A RUBBER CUSHION PLACED ON TOP OF THE FOUNDATION. THE RESULTS IMPLY THAT DYNAMIC PRELOADING WITH A DROP HAMMER CAN BE USED BOTH TO REDUCE AND PREDICT SETTLEMENTS DURING SUBSEQUENT STATIC LOADING. EQUIPMENT SUGGESTED FOR PRELOADING OF THE SOIL BENEATH THE TIP OF A BORED PILE IS DESCRIBED IN THE REPORT.
