THE DRYING PROPERTIES OF FLINT GRAVELS

An investigation has been made, both on the full-scale and in the laboratory, into the difficulty of drying flint gravels relative to other aggregates and into differences in drying properties of flint gravels with different water-absorption values. The objective was to assess whether modifications should be made to specifications and techniques for the drying of flint gravels in order to minimize the risk of stripping in bituminous mixtures made from these aggregates. Two flint gravels and five other aggregates were used in the work. It is concluded that whereas flint gravels are more difficult to dry than some aggregates, they are not necessarily the worst materials in this respect; nor are weathered flint gravels more difficult to dry than those varieties exhibiting lower water- absorption values. It is also concluded that improvements in drying techniques can be made, and that the introduction of a limit on residual moisture contents of aggregates used in dense bituminous mixtures should be considered.
