ILLINOIS PROMOTES A NATIONAL MARITIME POLICY

In the opinion of the author, the Chief of the Parts Management Section, Illinois Department of Transportation, a major factor in the decline of the size and capacity of the U.S. merchant marine fleet has been the lack of a national maritime policy to establish direction for its rebuilding, due to no consensus within the federal administration, the compress, and the maritime industry. This is a source of great concern to the state of Illinois, since three fifths of its exports are by water. As a member state of the Council of Great Lakes Governors it has help to stimulate such a policy. The Council has recommended that a special task force be created to study the problems facing the maritime industry, recommend solutions to be implemented by both the federal government and the maritime industry, and prepare a final report recommending a national maritime policy.
