Previous articles in this series on asphalt compaction have discussed how compaction affects the quality of asphalt concrete pavements and what equipment and techniques are best for achieving proper compaction. Another side of the compaction story is the measurement or quality control program: how the contractor and the highway agency determine if the desired density has been attained. The present article examines the methods and equipment currently available for measuring density. Subjects covered include nuclear density gages, density standards and thin lift measurements, and roller-mounted density gages.
