HIGHWAY FOUNDATION PREPARATION IN A SWAMP

The foundation for the road embankment of a 1.2km length of the recently constructed Johannesburg Western By-pass freeway, had to be prepared in a swampy area heavily polluted by mine slimes, left as a residue from previous gold mining operations. The foundation for the road embankment was prepared by heavy poundings, producing short large diameter rock columns combined with improvemnet to the surrounding slimes materials by dynamic consolidation.
