FOURIER SERIES. APPLICATION TO DAILY VARIATION LINES

It is investigated whether a satisfactory approximation of the Fourier series can be attained with an acceptable laboriousness for a given daily variation line, and what conditions have to be taken into account for this purpose. The daily variation lines of street traffic show how the traffic rate changes throughout the day. They represent a periodic occurrence which can be mathematically described as Fourier series. In practical calculations of the Fourier series, their infinite number of members is limited to a finite one. As a result, an approximation is obtained by means of a finite trigonometric polynomial. The periodic function can be determined by a numerical harmonic analysis with acceptable laboriousness.
