INFLUENCE OF OZONE ON STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOUR OF ELASTOMERIC BRIDGE BEARINGS

The object of this paper is to examine relevance of the conventional tests for ozone resistance in the case of bridge bearings, as well as to review the results of ozone resistance tests carried out earlier. Action of ozone on rubber and particularly rubber bridge bearings is discussed and various methods of protection adopted to mitigate partially, or wholly, the effects of ozone are outlined. It is recommended that a simulated and representative test at the laboratory level needs to be evolved to control the quality of bridge bearings. (TRRL)
