This paper reviews the current road safety situation in the UK, examines some achievements, and identifies needs for the future. Some of the recommendations of a government committee (alness report) are listed with reference to road users (94 recommendations in the report), roads (116 recommendations), and vehicles (23 recommendations). Tables of accident statistics are presented covering a period from 1973 to 1982. Education is identified as the most urgent need in the continuing effort towards improvement in road safety. For the covering abstract of the symposium see TRIS No. 394672. (TRRL)
