SHEAR STRENGTH OF SANDS UNDER HIGH CONFINING STRESSES

Prediction of strength characteristics of cohesionless soils by extrapolation from results of conventional triaxial compression tests will lead to considerable error on the unsafe side. Thus it is essential to know the behaviour of these soils under actual field loading conditions where high confining stresses may be involved. Dry sands of Solani at Roorkee and Ranipur have been subjected to different high stress values, up to 135 kg/sq cm, a range not reached by many earlier investigators. The influence of different variables, gradation, particle size and shape, crushing of particles and initial void ratio on the shear strength of granular soils has been analysed and evaluated from the test data. The results indicate that shear characteristics of granular soils are affected by confining stress in a number of ways which appear to be a result of the tendency of soil particles to crush under high confining stresses. Angle of internal friction improved with improvement in gradation at the same confining stress, while for all of the materials tested angle of internal friction decreased with increase of confining stress at a decreasing rate.
