The advantages and shortcomings of trolley buses, as compared with conventional buses, are listed. Trolley buses are best adapted for routes on which passenger loadings are high and relatively constant so there is little change in headways and a need for high-capacity vehicles. Power electronics has had a significant effect on trolley bus technology; other features of electric traction are also discussed. Trolley buses have a first cost at least 40 percent higher than diesel buses and there is additional investment for the overhead and power supply. When the fixed installation is used to the maximum, meaning short-headway routes, trolley buses do offer high performance, protect the environment and utilize an energy source independent of petroleum. After a 25-year decline in this technology, it is undergoing a resurgence.
