SUBSIDIES AND THE PROVISION OF URBAN PUBLIC TRANSPORT

This paper studies the effect of subsidies on the economic efficiency of transport undertakings, and whether they lead to higher costs of provision, more especially in a climate of governmental policies designed to reduce public expenditure. A single equation econometric analysis is outlined which suggests that subsidies and the nature of the political control of an area do influence the level of costs. (TRRL)
