CYCLE TRACKS IN RURAL AREAS

CYKELVAEGAR PAA LANDSBYGDEN

Sweden is putting forward recommendations on how cycle tracks can be built in urban areas. There are no integrated criteria or recommendations on how or when to build cycle tracks in road areas. The design of cycle tracks and the scale on which they are built in different parts of Sweden depends on the supply of money and the experience or/else interest of the designer. The aim of this work was to study literature from different countries and to combine and compare criteria and recommendations from different countries. The best criteria were found in Dutch and American literature. Criteria and recommendations from Finland, Denmark, England and Germany were also studied. A few examples are chosen from Switzerland, India, Russia, Norway, Canada and Australia. The study tries to answer the following questions: (a) when shall a cycle track be built? (b) how shall a cycle track be designed? (c) how shall the cycle tracks be maintained? (TRRL)
