PLANNING URBAN BUS ROUTES.A STUDY FOR COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL

THE REPORT DESCRIBES A STUDY OF BUS ROUTING CARRIED OUT FOR COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL IN WHICH A COMPUTER MODEL (TRANSEPT) WAS DEVELOPED. THE MODEL CAN BE USED TO EVALUATE ALTERNATIVE ROUTE NETWORKS IN RELATION TO (1) THEIR COSTS OF OPERATION AND (2) THE SERVICE THEY PROVIDE. THE REPORT DESCRIBES BRIEFLY THE BASIS OF THE MODEL, AND DISCUSSES HOW IT WAS FITTED TO THE LOCAL CONDITIONS IN COVENTRY AND USED TO EVALUATE A RANGE OF ALTERNATIVE BUS ROUTE NETWORKS. A NETWORK IS RECOMMENDED THAT IS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE A SAVING IN BUS OPERATING COST OF BETWEEN $30,000 AND $50,000 PER ANNUM, WITHOUT REDUCING SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC. ALTERNATIVELY, THE SAME NETWORK MAY BE USED TO MAKE A FURTHER REDUCTION IN COST, WITH SOME REDUCTION IN SERVICE; OR TO OFFER AN IMPROVED SERVICE AT THE PRESENT COST.
