DELAYS AT PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS: 3 - THE DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF A SIMULATION MODEL OF A PELICAN CROSSING

This paper is a third in a series of articles about a major study of delays at pedestrian crossing facilities -zebra crossings and fixed-time and vehicle actuated pelicans - carried out by the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology under contract to the Transport and Road Research Laboratory. The first article was concerned primarily with the measurement and interpretation of site observations. The second article described the development and validation of a simulation model of a zebra crossing. This article similarly describes a pelican crossing model, which may operate in either fixed-time or vehicle actuated mode. The final article will describe the derivation of simplified mathematical relationships, linking delays to flows and other crossing parameters, and the general application of the study.
