THE RELATION BETWEEN TOWN STRUCTURE, TRANSPORTATION VOLUME AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION

BEBYGGELSESSTRUKTURENS INDVIRKNING PAA PERSONTRANSPORTARBEJDE OG ENERGIANVENDELSE

Passenger transportation accounts for approximately 20% of the total oil consumption in Nordic countries. To find substitutes for oil for transport purposes is difficult which raises the question whether a decrease could be achieved instead by reducing transport needs. Such a reduction could be accomplished for example through a better town planning. This report contains results from studies carried out in small and middle-sized Nordic cities (up to 200000 inh.). The results indicate that town structure to a great extent determine the volume of transportation, consequently also the energy consumption. The relation between town structure, transportation volume and energy consumption is very complex and demands further study. (Author/TRRL)
