TRUCK-TRUCK FATAL ACCIDENTS, 1980-82 (VERSION FEBRUARY 5, 1985)

This report provides one-way frequencies for all the variables in UMTRI's file of Truck-Truck Fatal Accidents, 1980-82. This file describes all two-vehicle fatal accidents involving two medium or heavy trucks. In describing the medium or heavy trucks, the file combines the coverage of the FARS data with the detail of the BMCS data. Where no BMCS report could be found for an appropriate medium or heavy truck listed by FARS, UMTRI conducted a survey, by telephone interview or by mail, to obtain the desired information on ownership, type of trip, vehicle configuration, cargo, weights, and lengths. Overall, a total of 173 fatal accidents involving two medium or heavy trucks occurred in 1980, 138 in 1981, and 127 in 1982. Accidents involving at least one tractor and semi-trailer constituted 87.2 percent of the total; accidents involving at least one straight truck with no trailer constituted 33.6 percent of the total.
