A METHODOLOGY FOR THE EVALUATION OF FUEL CONSUMPTION OF CAR TRAFFIC IN ALTERNATIVE URBAN ROAD NETWORKS

METHODIEK EVALUATIE BRANDSTOFVERBRUIK AUTOVERKEER BIJ ALTERNATIEVE STEDELIJKE WEGENSTRUCTUREN

The fuel consumption of car traffic in an urban road network is studied. The study was carried out in the municipality of Tilburg, because three alternative road networks were present (1) a basis network for a development following the trend, (2) a filter network by which rat run traffic is prevented, and (3) a sector network by which it is impossible to go through the centre of the traffic restraint area. A computer program for the calculation of the fuel consumption is evaluated. Less use of the car, caused by traffic restraining measures do not lead to less fuel consumption. The total number of vehicle hours will even increase by a large percentage, resulting in the traffic density being greater. (TRRL)
