A STUDY INTO THH WORKING CONDITIONS OF HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL

ONDERZOEK WERKOMSTANDIGHEDEN KANTONNIERS

There are about 950 surfacemen (highway maintenance personnel) in the Netherlands and their average age is 45-55 years. The main purpose of the report is to describe the working conditions and to make recommendations for the improvement of these conditions. There are too few personnel and therefore there is too much work for them. The overtime hours are paid only moderately and the work is rather dangerous. It is difficult to get new personnel even in a time of unemployment. While the average age is rather high and the work is hazardous, many surfacemen suffer from stress. It is recommended that they should receive a pension at 60. Recommendations for further study in the sociological field, are given. (TRRL)
