A RESEARCH PROJECT WAS STARTED IN GOTHENBURG 1970 WITH THE AIM OF STUDYING THE EFFECTS OF POLICE SUPERVISION AT SIGNAL- CONTROLLED INTERSECTIONS. INTENSIFIED STUDIES OF THE SCENES OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS WERE ALSO CARRIED OUT. MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE OF AVERAGE SPEEDS AND FREQUENCIES OF SPEED INCREASES AT CERTAIN DISTANCES BEFORE THE SIGNALS IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH A CHANGE TO A MORE DEFENSIVE STYLE OF DRIVING. A MATHEMATICAL FUNCTION DESCRIBING THE BRAKING SEQUENCE WAS DERIVED AND TESTED IN FIELD TRIALS. DATA COLLECTION WAS CARRIED OUT WITH TIME-LAPSE FILMING EQUIPMENT. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT THE STYLE OF DRIVING BECOMES MORE DEFENSIVE DURING PERIODS OF POLICE SUPERVISION. THERE WAS A DROP IN AVERAGE SPEEDS 35 METRES BEFORE THE STOP LINE AND THE DRIVING AGAINST RED DROPPED FROM 23,0 PERCENT TO 9,2 PERCENT OF THOSE VEHICLES WHICH ARE 40 TO 100 METRES FROM THE STOP LINE WHEN THE LIGHTS CHANGE TO GREEN-AMBER. AS FOR THE ACCIDENT STUDY, THE LARGEST ACCIDENT GROUP INDICATED THAT ROAD USERS HAD NOT BEEN AWARE OF SIGNALS OR OF THE RED SIGNAL PHASE (23% OF THE ACCIDENTS). FROM THE INVESTIGATION IT IS EVIDENT THAT BEHAVIOUR VARIATIONS CONDITIONED BY THE DESIGN OF THE INTERSECTION ARE GREATER THAN THOSE CONDITIONED BY POLICE SUPERVISION.
