MORE THAN JUST A ROAD: CAMPAIGN TO IMPROVE THE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY OF NEW RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT

The requirements for roads and footpaths, particularly those relating to safety and convenience, are a major determinant of housing layout. In recent years architects, planners and highway engineers have together devised new ways of meeting these requirements which recognise that roads in housing areas are not just traffic routes, but are places where children play, residents walk and cars are parked, and which give the approach to each house its own identity. This information supplement describes and illustrates examples of these new housing schemes mainly in the West Midlands region. (TRRL)
