A literature review of existing studies of curved tendons, prestressing systems and international codes was carried out. Using the computer program PAFEC, a finite element analysis was conducted of (1) radial force on circular ducts (details are given of the loading arrangements, support conditions, single duct sections, three-duct slices), (2) radial force on oval ducts, and (3) grout pressure on circular ducts. In order to provide an experimental comparison to the finite element analysis, a number of concrete slice specimens were tested (in particular the concrete properties, loading arrangements, strain gauged slices). To confirm that the assumptions made in the idealised slice tests provide a true representation of the behaviour of a complete beam, three large scale beams were tested, each containing three prestressing tendons curved over the centre region of the beam. Details are given of the prestressed beam, test rig, instrumentation, analysis of beams, test results, and comparison with analysis and slice tests. A special study was undertaken of cracking above and below the bottom duct, and cracking adjacent to the top duct. Recommendations are put forward regarding the analysis, slice tests, and full size beam tests. (TRRL)
